ABOUT THE PROJECT
This project started with a practical brief and became one of the most personally meaningful things I've worked on. My client's husband uses a wheelchair, and their home — dated, compartmentalized, built without any thought for how he moved through it — wasn't working for either of them anymore. We brought in an architect, opened the floor plan, and rebuilt the entire space around how this family actually lives.
The detail I'm proudest of is the kitchen. A traditional island with counter stools would have left him on the outside of every gathering — watching from a distance while everyone else sat together. So we removed the counter stools entirely and built a custom banquette onto the back of the island instead, at the right height for a wheelchair to pull directly up to it. One table. Everyone together. It sounds simple. It wasn't, and it matters enormously to them.
The rest of the project followed the same logic — a wet bar so guests can help themselves without anyone playing host from across the room, a formal dining room converted from what had been an underused front sitting room, a powder room and master bath both redesigned to be fully accessible without looking clinical. Bright, fresh, lakehouse-inspired throughout. A home that finally works as hard as the people living in it.
Dining Room Before & After
A redesigned fireplace, refinished floors, casual relaxed furnishings and simple drapery took a formal living room and reimagined it into a much needed dining room for our client.
Kitchen
Before & After
Custom cabinetry painted in Farrow & Ball’s Cornforth White, a banquette built onto the back side of the island, a La Cornue range and antique brass hardware gave our client a kitchen that is classic with just the right amount of modernity to keep it feeling fresh and current. Everything considered for accessibility, ease of movement and ample space for gathering with friends and family.
Styling
We were able to incorporate our clients artwork and heirloom items into the styling and what resulted was a home that feels personal and connected.
Fireplace Before & After
With minimal effort we were able to give our client’s dated fireplace new life. After removing the floating mantle, and over grouting the stone it became something understated and added great texture to the room.
